Scripture Reference: Acts 13:4-14:28

(you will read about the first missionary journey in these Bible verses)

This lesson plan is specifically focused on the journeys of Paul as a missionary for Jesus. If you would introduce Paul (Saul) to your students/children first in order that it is understood that Saul was not always a Christian. He converted to Christianity after meeting with Jesus and he had a conversion journey prior to all his missionary journeys.

Paul's First Missionary Journey

Story Overview: Paul’s first missionary journey took him from Cyprus into the heart of Attalia. Saul and Joseph (called Barnabas) accompanied by Barnabas' cousin John Mark, set out from Antioch for Cyprus, visiting Salamis and Paphos. This first missionary journey too approximately two years and was around 1,400 miles.

They then crossed to the mainland (modern Turkey), landing at the Mediterranean port of Attalia. From there they proceeded inland to the cities along the military road in southern Asia Minor.

At Perge, for unknown reasons, John Mark left them to return to Jerusalem. Saul and Barnabas then stopped at Pisidian Antioch, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe, all in the Roman province of Galatia, before retracing their steps to revisit the congregations they had founded earlier. Then it was back to Perge, where this time they preached the gospel, and Attalia. But, instead of returning to Cyprus, they sailed directly back to Antioch, Syria where they began their odyssey. There, after covering some 1,400 miles, Paul and Barnabas stayed a long time.

You will use the VPC (Veritas Press Bible Cards): Acts-Revelation Series, SKU:000650, Marlin and Laurie Detweiler (Veritas Press Website). These cards are not necessary to teach this Missionary Map Project, they are supplemental; but a great addition to your homeschool library and to this Paul’s Missionary Journey Unit Study. In addition, you will need a large cardboard poster board to draw your map to work on for the next four weeks.
