Mexico City Embraces the 21st century
Mexico City is almost 8,000 feet above sea level in a shallow valley surrounded by mountains and quite literally is crammed with twenty million people. Mexico City is a fabulous urban city! This capital city is nowhere near as intimidating as you might expect! I certainly did not have enough time to explore all the little cobblestone streets and hidden markets either.
Here is a bit of history if you didn't know . . . the Aztecs first established the capital on an island in Lake Texcoco. However, in 1521, the Spaniards invaded and conquered and destroyed the city. They then went on to build Mexico City on top of the Aztec ruins. Lake Texcoco did not have any natural drainage and after a terrible flood the Spaniards drained it. This is where Mexico City sits today.
You might not be aware of the European influences in the city's architecture and religion. Simply walk the streets and you will be in architecture heaven. I can't wait to return on a treasure hunting and exploring trip where I know I will find loads of antique French, Spanish and Italian influences.
