I have been educating my children for over a decade now and we have amassed a great number of educational toys over the years. I like to think that I know what works, what kids like, what kids will actually utilize, and what kids will actually play with.
While learning is a strong motivation for me, I also want my children to enjoy learning. If they aren’t enjoying learning, what is the point? If I can purchase educational toys for them that are fun and they are learning at the same time, that is a huge win for me. Teaching my children to love science through toys is great.
I have an entire shelving unit in my home full of science experiment kits that I have purchased over the years. My son was particularly interested in science and magic when he was younger, so all he ever wanted for every holiday and birthday was science experiment kits. I have been able to use and reuse what I think are the best kits over the years and determine which ones are duds.

We have been hatching butterflies for nearly a decade now. This is a STEM activity that my children beg to complete every single year - and they are teenagers and STILL want to hatch butterflies! Granted, my children all adore animals, so that helps. This little Butterfly Garden Kit comes with everything you need. What I especially love about this kit is my kids needed very little guidance from me because the instructions are easy-to-follow and color-coded so your child will easily complete the experiment without any trouble. The book explains what’s going on in each experiment so they understand why and how things work.
Now, we have purchased the butterflies, like I said, for about a decade now. But we have also had ants (don’t do this one unless you are very careful). We have also grown ladybugs with the Ladybug Land Kit- several times with this kit, which was SO MUCH FUN! This is a great one to investigate. We have also grown Praying Mantis aka: stick bugs kit with feeding bugs - which again, was so much fun. We have also done the Grow 'n Glow Terrarium, which didn’t work for us for some reason?? We tried the Windowsill Greenhouses - Venus Fly Trap and the DuneCraft Dome Terrariums - Carnivorous Plants and neither worked very well for us. They did begin, but died off and didn’t fully grow well. Perhaps it is our water?
